Catch This: How the Juggler Persona Keeps Your Insights Career in Motion

This is the essence of “The Juggler,” a persona that transforms insights from static reports into dynamic forces for change. In a landscape where uncertainty is the only constant and AI has accelerated the pace of everything, learning to juggle with intention isn’t just a nice-to-have skill. It’s the difference between being overwhelmed by the chaos and orchestrating it into impact.

Editor’s Note: In this occasional column for All Things Insights, consumer insights expert Colleen Funkey explores the six personas you can use to deliver on high impact work and move your insights career forward. The next persona that she examines is “The Juggler.”

Persona 5: The Juggler

Quick, catch this!

Without thinking, your hand reaches out. But you’re not reacting to where the ball is, you’re anticipating where it will be. In a fraction of a second, your brain predicts the trajectory and positions your body to meet it.

The ability to anticipate and adapt is one of the most important capabilities for an insights leader to develop. With the only certainty being uncertainty, success depends on being able to read a situation, see what others don’t yet see and make small course corrections before they become necessary.

It’s a lot like being a juggler. Insights leaders have to constantly balance competing priorities, shifting stakeholder expectations, and an ever-changing landscape of tools and technologies. Our role isn’t just to keep all the balls in the air but to ensure the work lands where it needs to, resonates with the people who need to act on it and delivers the business impact it was intended for.

Whew, it’s a lot!

In this series of “6 personas to propel your insights career,” the juggler is quite possibly the most critical because if we cannot maintain the momentum needed to move insights work forward and realize its value, then what is the purpose of generating insights?

Watch the pattern, not the ball

A juggler does not focus on the ball in their hand, they watch the entire pattern. If we allow ourselves to be consumed by individual stakeholder requests, it becomes easy to lose sight of the broader ecosystem with its relationships, dependencies, influences, and ripple effects that determine whether work gains momentum or loses it.

The best jugglers don’t wait for a ball to drop before they react. They notice subtle changes in the pattern and make small adjustments to keep everything moving. The difference between generating insights and driving impact often lies in these small adjustments. Learning to read the room, listening for the question behind the question and paying attention to what is left unsaid, enables us to anticipate shifts in stakeholder sentiment, identify emerging risks before they become problems and surface options before they are requested. This is the invisible labor of the insights leader that sustains momentum and turns insights into business impact.

Anticipation + Adaptation creates rhythm

By anticipating (not reacting) and adapting as conditions change, insights leaders can create a rhythm that stakeholders come to rely on. They trust we’ll identify emerging risks early on, navigate uncertainty with confidence and respond thoughtfully, not impulsively. This confidence is built through lots of small, often invisible, course corrections that keep the work moving. Over time these actions build the credibility that earns trust.

Not every ball needs your attention (right now)

The juggler doesn’t treat every ball (or every stakeholder or project) the same. They know what needs attention now, what can wait and which issues are likely to become a problem if ignored. Earlier in my career I was given advice that has stayed with me: learn to tell the difference between the glass balls and the rubber balls. Some projects are rubber balls, if they fall, they can bounce back (and you can recover fairly smoothly) but don’t drop the glass ones! And make sure you notice when a rubber ball may turn into a glass ball as priorities shift or stakeholder expectations change. This is especially relevant in the age of AI, as we often find ourselves with even more balls, now moving at breakneck speed!

Don’t multitask, create flow

Multitasking fragments our attention but looking for patterns focuses it. And when our attention is focused, we can create the conditions for flow.

As insights leaders, our role is not just to generate insights, it is to create the momentum that allows insights to become impactful. So when we stop trying to do too many things at once and instead shift our focus to looking for the pattern across people and priorities, our thinking becomes clearer, allowing us to create the flow that scales our impact without leaving us overwhelmed, even as demands continue to grow.
